Hunger Games Post 1 and Prediction
This book is about a girl named Katniss Everdeen. In the beginning of this book, Katniss is at her house and she explains her family dynamic. Her father died and her mom shut down when he died so she became the man of the family. She also has a younger sister named Primrose, Prim for short. She lives in the country of Panem. Panem is located where North America used to be. The Capitol decides what happens with the laws and there are Twelve Districts around the Capitol. Katniss lives in the Twelfth District, which is a miner's district. The part of the district she lives in is called the Seam, which is basically the ghetto. She hunts in the area around District 12 so that she can provide food for her family. In the nation of Panem, it is illegal to hunt but the leaders love fresh meat so they're easy on hunters. Katniss hunts with her friend Gabe and they sell their game on the black market. A long time ago, when Panem was a new nation, there was 13 Districts and they revolted. Because of this, the Capitol killed everyone in the 13th District and shut it down. Then they wrote up documents about what was okay to do, what was punishment and what was forbidden. To prevent another revolution, the Hunger Games were invented to keep the districts in there places. It was made to remind them that they had a ton of power over every district. One boy and one girl from every district are sacrificed to the Games. Adolescents ages 12-18 are possible candidates for the Games. When you are twelve, your name is put into a jar once but each year you get older, your name is put in more and more. If you volunteer to have your name put in a bunch of times, your family is rationed out food. For most families in the 12th District it is essential for them to have that food. Because her family needs food and because of her age, Katniss puts her name in 20 times, her friend Gabe has his in 42 times and Katniss' little sister who is only twelve has her name in once because Katniss wouldn't let her put her name in any more times. There is a very slim chance of Prim being chosen, but it is still possible. On the day that they pick the names, everyone dresses up nice and they decorate the town because the Capitol forces them to treat this as a joyous event. When Katniss doesn't hear her name called, at first she is glad but then she realizes who was called and is horrified. Her little sister, Prim, was called to be sacrificed to the Hunger Games (we haven't yet learned what they exactly have to do but we know that it is very dangerous and only one person lives, we also know that people in Panem watch the Hunger Games as entertainment) so Katniss volunteers to go in her place. When Katniss hears that the boy is someone who helped her out when her family was starving after her father died, she is upset. This boy got beaten by his mother just so that he could help her out and Katniss never knew if she should thank him or what. Since on the inside cover it says that she has to choose between love and life, I think that she is going to become close friends with the boy and then have to make a tough choice about whether or not to kill him or disassociate with him.

Joanie--
ReplyDeleteUsing the book jacket and the hints it gives you to predict is a great strategy. I think you have read the book before (although I am not sure, so feel free to correct me) so I look forward to seeing you utilize the same strategy on a book you have not read and see how accurate you are.
My guess is that you'll be quite accurate (good prediction on my part? We'll see...)
I haven't read this book before...
ReplyDeleteDear Joanie,So far you have gotten me interested in reading the book.I don't want anyone to be killed though. It sounds like there is no other option.I am glad I am not in the heroine's position. (I did find one spelling error.)
